Sugar apples are an important fruit crop in Taitung. So as to promote eco-friendly and organic cultivation concepts, the TTDARES held the Eco-friendly Sugar Apple Cultivation Demonstration Event on June 20, 2019, at the Banchiu Branch Station. TTDARES Deputy Director Chen Yu-chu stated that with consumers’ and society’s growing concern over eco-friendliness and food safety, eco-friendly and organic farming are agricultural trends of the future. He expressed his hope that the event would allow growers to become more familiar with eco-friendly sugar apple crop management and operations. Li Jun-yi, the owner of the orchard where the event was held, shared about his transition from traditional to organic farming and gave attendees a guided tour of his orchard. In addition, TTDARES assistant researcher Lin Yen-yu spoke about eco-friendly groundcover and pest/disease management for sugar apple orchards. The event and exchanges were aimed at helping growers who are looking to make the transition to organic farming, which will make Taitung’s sugar apple industry more unique and more competitive.
