2017-09-15

In light of the severe damage caused to sugar apple trees last year by typhoons, the TTDARES held its “Sugar Apple Orchard Windbreak Demonstration Event” on June 15 at the Taimali orchard of sugar apple grower Zhan Qian-hong so as to remind growers to prepare in advance and thus reduce losses. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that he hoped to remind growers to take the necessary measures to prevent wind-induced damage before strong winds strike. Assistant researcher Lin Yan-yu spoke on the effects on sugar apple tree growth stages as well as types of damage caused by typhoon and foehn winds. He went on to share about measures to reduce losses based on each type of damage as well as what to be aware of when carrying out such measures. Then, assistant researcher Lin Jun-qi explained how to prevent anthrax that can result after a storm, also stating that agrochemical control is advisable before and after rainy seasons. Finally, associate researcher Jiang Shu-wen led attendees around Zhan’s orchard so they could see the outstanding windbreak effects of growing Diospyros egbert-walkeri Kosterm trees in the orchard along with ordinary management methods.
